Framing
Stud
A vertical framing member in a wall, typically 2x4 or 2x6 lumber spaced 16 or 24 inches on center, that supports loads and provides nailing surface for sheathing and drywall.

In the Field
2x6 studs are used for exterior walls when additional insulation depth (R-21 batts vs. R-13) is required. 16-inch spacing is standard for load-bearing walls; 24-inch spacing saves lumber in non-bearing applications but affects drywall and sheathing spans.

Rule of Thumb
Standard wall stud length for an 8-foot ceiling with double top plate and single bottom plate is 92-5/8 inches (precut studs are sold this length for this reason).
