Framing
Blocking
Short pieces of lumber installed between studs, joists, or rafters to provide structural support, fire stopping, or a nailing surface for fixtures.
🏗️
In the Field
Blocking serves multiple purposes: backing for grab bars and handrails, fire stopping at mid-height of tall walls, lateral support for joists and rafters, and nailing surface for cabinets and fixtures. Mark blocking locations on the framing before drywall.
📐
Rule of Thumb
Install blocking for any wall-mounted item that will carry weight: TVs, grab bars, cabinets, and handrails all need solid backing. A screw in drywall alone will not hold.
