Means and Methods

The techniques, sequence, and procedures a contractor uses to accomplish the work; generally the contractor's responsibility, not the designer's.

In the Field

Means and methods clauses protect designers from liability for how you build. The engineer specifies the result; you choose how to get there. This matters for shoring, crane picks, concrete forming, and temporary works.

Rule of Thumb

If the contract or RFI response says 'per contractor means and methods,' the liability for that method rests entirely with you. Document your engineering basis.
