Concrete
Lap Splice
The overlap length required between two rebar pieces to transfer load from one bar to the next through the surrounding concrete.
🏗️
In the Field
Lap splice lengths are specified in the structural drawings — never assume. Tension lap splices are longer than compression splices. Stagger splices so they don't all occur at the same section.
📐
Rule of Thumb
A common tension lap splice for #5 rebar in 4,000 psi concrete is approximately 24 inches. Always check the structural schedule — it varies by bar size, concrete strength, and coating.
