In the Field
Silt fence, sediment basins, inlet protection, and stabilized construction entrances are standard erosion control BMPs. NPDES stormwater permits require an approved SWPPP and routine inspections. Violations can result in significant fines.

Rule of Thumb
Install erosion controls before you break ground — not after rain has already moved your soil. Inspections are required within 24 hours of a 0.5-inch rain event on most NPDES permits.
