Dewatering
The process of removing groundwater from an excavation to keep it dry enough for safe working conditions and proper construction.
🏗️
In the Field
Dewatering methods range from simple sump pumps to wellpoint systems and deep wells for large excavations. Discharge permits are required — you can't just pump groundwater into the storm drain without authorization.
📐
Rule of Thumb
Plan dewatering before you dig. If borings show groundwater within 5 feet of your excavation bottom, design a dewatering system as part of the bid, not as an afterthought.
