Concrete
Air Entrainment
The intentional introduction of microscopic air bubbles into concrete to improve freeze-thaw resistance and workability.
🏗️
In the Field
Air-entrained concrete is required for any exterior flatwork in freeze-thaw climates. Test air content at the truck with a pressure meter. Too little air means freeze-thaw damage; too much air drops strength.
📐
Rule of Thumb
Target 5–7% air content for exposed concrete in freeze-thaw zones. Each 1% increase in air content reduces compressive strength by approximately 5%.
