Water reducers (plasticizers) let you lower the w/c ratio without losing workability. Accelerators speed up set time in cold weather. Retarders slow set in hot weather. Always verify admixtures are compatible with each other and the cement type.

Rule of Thumb
Never add water to compensate for a stiff mix — use a water-reducing admixture instead. Water is free; it just destroys your strength.
