How It Works

Studs: Length ÷ spacing + 1 end stud + 3 per opening + 10% waste.
Plates: Wall length × plate rows + 5% waste.
Blocking: One mid-height fire block row per wall length.
Headers: Doubled lumber over each opening.
Sheathing: Wall area ÷ 32 SF per sheet + 10% waste.

Field Tips

• Snap chalk lines for plate layout before standing walls.
• Crown all studs the same direction — bows face up on floor joists.
• IRC requires fire blocking at mid-height in walls over 10 ft.
• Use LVL or engineered lumber for headers over 6 ft openings.
• Sheathing nailing pattern matters — check local wind/seismic codes.
