Drip Edge
A metal flashing installed along roof edges (eaves and rakes) that directs water away from the fascia and into the gutter.

In the Field
Drip edge installation order is critical: at the eave, drip edge goes under the ice and water shield; at the rake, drip edge goes over the underlayment. This order ensures water always sheds over (not under) each layer.

Rule of Thumb
Always install drip edge — even when not explicitly required by code. It protects the fascia from rot and directs water into gutters cleanly. Aluminum drip edge is typically the minimum; copper is used on high-end work.
