Roof Decking
The structural sheathing (typically OSB or plywood) applied over roof rafters or trusses that provides the surface for roofing materials.
🏗️
In the Field
Minimum deck thickness for asphalt shingles is 3/8 inch, but 7/16 OSB or 1/2 inch plywood is standard practice. H-clips are required for OSB to support the edges between rafters. Replace any soft, delaminated, or rotten decking before re-roofing.
📐
Rule of Thumb
When re-roofing, check every square foot of decking for soft spots by walking the surface or probing with a screwdriver. Replacing bad decking before new shingles go on is far cheaper than tearing off new shingles later.
